OIKOSLOGOS
The International Architectural
Competition for an Eco Centre, Busan, Korea
The site for the Eco Centre was once
covered with sea water.
The boundary of the Eco Centre,
OIKOSLOGOS, is beyond the building itself but space associated with it.
The Eco Centre is the starting platform for learning about the island, the
Nakdong River, Busan and the earth as a whole…the nature. For example, the
activities, bird-watching, Zooplankton, exploration, hydrological and
water quality, rowing and sailing on the Nakdong River form part of the
educational program by opening up internal spaces outside.
The building itself is an exhibition of
nature, a series semi- protected/ covered/ controlled spaces enable wing,
light and rain to be experienced by the visitors. Man made and nature –
protected and unprotected. Architecturally, the proposed Eco Centre is
articulated and echoing to both conflict and harmony; Nature and man-made
to achieve a positive co-existence of human beings and nature. An
architectural balancing act: dialogue between...
Central to the Hall is a main vertical
access, a set of lifts through which visitors can rise up to the top of
the Eco- Centre. Located at the top is an outdoor Platform, forming first
part of an outdoor ecological Observatory - A, visitors enjoy view of the
whole building, observation of the Ulsuk island, the Nakdong river and
beyond…the nature. Below the outdoor Platform, all exhibition spaces are
within view. Staircases and ramps lead to the spaces below. Spaces are
organized as an anti-clockwise vortex, radiating outwards. From the
Platform looking below, visitors become part of the exhibition as human
beings are part of the eco system.
